Need to post it!

Not quite keeping to my blog post a day but that's not to mean I'm not doing the research, I'm just not posting about it! So I came across this little blog by a childrens tv director John Kenn. It's a rather self indulgent project, where he draws scenes of the creepy and weird, of monsters and giants but fits it all into the small viewing window of a Post it note. Its not the style nor substance of the drawings that really catches my eye, despite them being rather commanding, it is his use of composition, in that each image really feels like a little window into a weird world.

Sometimes it's good to show your seams!

Found a rather charming animation with a wicked combination of elements. what I liked most about it though, was that it wasn't afraid to show its seams (oh tehe, I love bad pun times), but in all seriousness, they could have slaved away and made this into a stop motion where you didn't see their hands but I really like that you can, it gives it a sense of fun that they are playing with these sack boys instead of just animating them and so really it brings out the context of their character for me!

A little chuckle was had

So this is an Older illustration, circa 2006 By Piven for The Times magazine. What catches my eye is Pivens sense of fun and strong ability to play with multiple dimensions and media to create strikingly effective, collaged caricatures, while infusing the work with his own personality and refraining from the grotesque that over stylised Caricature illustration seems to pigeon hole itself as in my mind.

An Important Self Reminder.

A piece of work came to my attention a few days ago, that really captures the essence of a recent epiphany, this piece by Onesidezeront . The message itself is a rather serious one, in that as a creative mind we should use our own voice and celebrate our own voice rather than copy other or berate ourselves for not being like others. That individuality within creativity is the core component to effective communication, well that's my perspective anywho!

What really pushes this image for me, is its self indulgence, it feels clear to me that despite the message its portraying being one of an honest and serious nature, the illustrator has infused his personality and playfulness into it whilst still keeping the type clean, bringing about the impression that its something the illustrator takes as a sort of personal mantra and like my self has had to repeat more than a few times.

An exert from a uni project, a retelling of the star wars prequels! the point of this project was to experiment and make mistakes and find a different way to tell a narrative than the usual panel by panel narrative form, while keeping myself loose within technique and media.

I'm a massive One Piece fan and have no qualms about that fact, in fact I celebrate that fact, because One Piece is AWESOME! Now as for this piece of work, I wanted to spend a little bit of time and push a more realistic tone and context, after all Sanji is my inner fool, that's a fact that neither me nor my libido/ego could hope to dispute! As for the final product, I'm happy with the direction I have taken the image and look forward to pushing it further in the next instalment!

Web Design times!

So a little while ago on one our rather informative Wednesday

lectures, we had a presentation on the importance of a strong website for those in the creative industry, books being judged by their covers and all!

So it makes sense to me to search out, or at least point out those I stumble across, that in my opinion work within the confines of my creative ideal... or just things that make me crave the creative process!

The first of such finds is the site of Rilla Alexander and her alter ego Sozi. Now what I find myself drawn to, is actually a rather simple concept but it really pushes the concept of the site to that level that makes me want to post about it. The design of the interface works rather well, with the the style of the character driving home a solid format that gives off a clean asthetic, with none of the design feeling out of place in regards to the context of both the character (at least my perception of it), and the site itself.

What really got to me was the simple action of the eyes moving and following your cursor around, a simple play on the old eyes of a painting adage. This small touch really brought the character that the artist is trying to promote to life and infused it with that little bit more character and interest for me as a viewer. I wont touch on the contents of the site because for the purpose of this article I'm only interested in that first judgement and I'm taking away from it a lesson for myself on the importance of small concise touches like this for my own practice!

three T-shirt designs i did for the EVE/JINX tee comp only to have them rejected for "one reason or another"... i shit you not... thats what they fucking said, they had rules and i fucking followed them. submitted them at the right canvas scale at the right dpi in the right format with my own images in context... what shit....... wrote an angry fucking rant about them being massive amateurs... such shit!

more sketching

doing a little bit of the old sketching, mixing some very quick charcoal drawing with a little digital messing around. trying to stay in the ring, and have fun doing it. was staying with the movies theme.

A "Z"?

Another quick update, what could it mean?! This piece was a quick sketch for a mothly drawing thread on the three A forums, centering around movies. its drawn with 3 chalk shades, scanned and then fucked with in photoshop. i liked the outcome, felt it fitted the old duke!

magnum snake

Long time no updates. fancied doing a pencil drawing, was inspired by the Tom Selleck and how much he resembles old snake (mgs4), so i firgured i'd have a go at a sort of mash up of the two. i really need to learn how to clean up a pencil drawing for web desplay... fuck it!

a work in progress of one of my favourite characters from the Sopranos. it also still needs alot of work really and has gone from a quick sketch into a more worked on piece. figured i needed to upload something to keep myself in the habit though and spring break has been a lazy affair thus far.

Trying to get back into the old photoshop and digital waork, thought id do a quick 10 min digi sketch. no reference, 1 brush and only 2 colours in my pallet (plus the white of the background i guess). been over a year since i've done any sort of digital sketching and frankly i need more practice as is but i guess thats the point of this blog, do work and record my process.

The third and last instalment of this HG Wells book project. painting is super happy fun times, though painting the fire made me feel super dizzy, yet another one i would love to add a little more to but alas, oil takes its sweet time drying, so its gonna have to do.
